Executive Summary

Oct 2019
PROSPECTS
Sustainability is expected to be key in coffee pods packaging

There have been growing environmental concerns over coffee pods, both from consumers and government regulatory forces, which resulted in major changes in 2018. Keurig Canada Inc made all its K-cups recyclable by upgrading the plastic type from grade 7 to recyclable grade 5, as part of its commitment to make all the Keurig pods recyclable by the end of 2018.

Packaging innovations will play a vital role in further expansion of instant coffee

Instant coffee was strong influenced in 2018 by Nestlé’s advertising campaign for Nescafé Gold. Nescafé witnessed major changes in its packaging as part of a nationwide campaign to persuade fresh coffee consumers to switch to instant coffee.

Flexible packaging records healthy growth

Flexible packaging, particularly plastic, was one of the most dynamic pack types in terms of total unit volume in hot drinks packaging in 2018, thanks to the many benefits and attractive features it offers to manufacturers, distributors, retailers and consumers. For manufacturers and brands, it offers a more economic (for example, low minimum order sizes) and more modern look, with an improved visual effect on store shelves.
