PROSPECTS
Volume stagnation but value growth leads to growth in premium pack types

Coffee is a mature category in France, and volume growth is limited, but value continues to grow, as consumers becoming increasingly sophisticated. This will play itself out across a range of categories, notably in fresh coffee beans.

Coffee pod growth continues; brands start to address environmental concerns

Fresh ground coffee pods remain the driving force behind retail value growth in coffee, and this growth, while likely to slow, is set to continue over the forecast period. As penetration starts to reach its peak, it is likely that brands will focus their attention on frequency and quantity of purchase, in order to add value.

The growth of fruit/herbal tea benefits folding cartons and plastic pouches

With the rapid growth of fruit/herbal tea, favoured for its health and wellness associations, as well as its versatility for various consumption occasions, including as an after-dinner digestive or for a moment of relaxation during the day, folding cartons are in high demand. While some brands continue to launch tea capsules, such as Foods International’s La Tisanière Nuit Calme, the growth of tea capsules is likely to be much more short lived in comparison with coffee capsules, and new tea capsule launches are not expected to accelerate significantly over the forecast period.
