In Sweden, coffee drinking is fostered through a tradition called fika – in which Swedes meet for coffee. While the outbreak of COVID-19 restricted activities in public, many Swedish consumers were working from home, and therefore also drinking more coffee at home, helping maintain growth in coffee consumption in the retail channel in 2020.
Morgon Coffee Roasters redesigned its aluminium/plastic pouch packaging in order to make it more eye-catching by using colours that stand out from a distance. The new design has larger and bolder letters, providing information on the pack contents, volume and country of origin.
Consumers were gradually returning to pre-COVID-19 lifestyles in 2021, leading to a rise in demand for convenient packaging formats that cater to the on-the-go consumption trend. This was especially true of instant coffee sachets and sticks in instant coffee, which are convenient for carrying and using outdoors and on the move.
Manufacturers are increasingly looking to make their packaging more environmentally sustainable, at the same time as remaining practical. For example, in 2021, Graphic Packaging International, in collaboration with Club Coffee, launched a recyclable paper-based can called Boardio for packaging roasted coffee.
Folding cartons are expected to continue to take share from flexible aluminium/plastic in fresh ground coffee pods. Sales of fresh ground coffee pods are expected to see only modest year-on-year growth over the forecast period, given the rising concern about the recyclability of this product’s packaging.
