In 2021, the Singapore government imposed fresh COVID-19 restrictions to curb the spread of the virus. However, unlike in 2020, the new measures did not cause significant stockpiling behaviour, although retail sales of hot drinks have continued to benefit from greater at-home consumption compared to pre-pandemic levels.
Fresh ground coffee pods packaging was already seeing the strongest unit volume growth over the review period in hot drinks packaging, driven by sustained demand for these products, with a sales spike noted when the pandemic hit Singapore in 2020, followed by further positive, if modest, growth in 2021. The main pack types are folding cartons (primary) and other metal (secondary).
Constant innovation is being seen in hot drinks packaging, with leading brands like Nestlé as well as much smaller brands all putting a lot of effort into developing and introducing eco-friendly sustainable packaging solutions. For example, Nestlé Singapore started using reusable polypropylene plastic caddies instead of paper boxes for its beverage products.
Flexible plastic is expected to see a relatively weak performance after 2020 as consumers are increasingly becoming aware of the environmental impact of plastic. Brands like Boncafé are also keen to follow this trend to position their products as eco-friendly and sustainable by introducing biodegradable packaging that is paper-based.
Leading players are expected to continue investing in emerging and sustainable packaging. For example, Nestlé Singapore, as part of its global company strategy, is committed making 100% of its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025.
