Even before the onset of COVID-19, the review period had seen strong growth in demand for ready meals packaging, but the pandemic added impetus to this trend in 2020. With consumers spending more time at home during the year, they ate more meals there.
Chilled pizza packaging had been seeing very strong growth over the review period, although this slowed slightly during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. While frozen pizza packaging accelerated at the start of the pandemic, with the fact that frozen pizza can be stored for a much longer period than chilled pizza playing a significant role in this, as did its relatively low price in the context of a difficult economic environment.
The pandemic aside, strong growth in demand for ready meals packaging in Poland during the review period was driven by urbanisation, which is leading to an acceleration in consumer lifestyles, and shrinking household size. As a result, consumers are increasingly demanding convenient packaging that is not only easy to use but also provides some added value, such as microwaveability.
Environmental awareness is high among Polish consumers and therefore higher-quality, smaller, more affordable, recyclable or biodegradable packaging is expected to become more of a norm in Poland over the forecast period. This shift will be supported by the government’s enactment of a waste management programme under which all citizens have to segregate their waste and increase the number of recycled products, including ready meal packaging.
Demand for ready meals packaging is expected to slip into negative territory for a couple of years from 2022. As the threat posed by COVID-19 begins to fade and daily life normalises, consumers will spend less time at home and eat fewer meals there, dampening growth in demand for ready meals packaging.
