COVID-19 led to an acceleration in demand growth for sauces, dressings and condiments packaging in Romania during 2020, as consumers spent more time at home and prepared and ate more meals there. On the other hand, the closure of horeca establishments weighed on demand, as these business – particularly smaller ones – often purchase these products from modern grocery retail outlets.
Herbs and spices are the biggest source of demand for packaging in sauces, dressings and condiments. After spiking slightly during 2020, when the pandemic hit the country, growth in packaging unit volumes slowed in 2021, with consumers cooking less at home than a year earlier.
The rate of growth in sauces, dressings and condiments packaging over the forecast period will be slower than in 2020 as well as most of the rest of the review period. As the threat posed by the pandemic begins to fade, daily life will gradually normalise and consumers will spend less time at home, preparing and eating fewer meals there.
Although the recycling rate in Romania is currently very low, sustainability is likely to play a more significant role in sauces, dressings and condiments packaging during the forecast period. Regulation will play a significant role in this.
