  • Wine saw a cultural shift in 2014. People were discovering and increasingly adopting wine into different consumption occasions. Some of the key drivers were related to the on-going health-consciousness (mainly amongst women and the ageing population), the latest product variety (due to free trade agreements), aspirational lifestyle (sophistication, to be “in”), expanding businesses (wine bar), the interest of younger demographic in wine very recently (more adventurous) and the increased accessibility to wine information through social networks (smartphone apps, social media) and education alternatives (sommeliers, wine tasting).

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Even though the wine market in Costa Rica is still fragmented compared with beer, the leading player Florida Bebidas SA remained the leading wine distributing company in the country after it completed the acquisition of Holtermann’s wine division in the final quarter of 2010, which included Vinum, its exclusive wine and alcoholic drink stores. The rest is owned by Grupo Pampa, which ranked second (distributing a good product portfolio that goes from differentiated high quality to value for money alternatives offered through its strategically located wine restaurants-cellars) and other mid-scale distributors such as Distribuidora Isleña and many family-run businesses.

PROSPECTS

  • One of the key drivers in the forecast period will be blends used by creative winemakers. Emerging or re-emerging varieties are expected to see higher levels of dynamism, mainly through the increasing presence of New World wines. Consumers might therefore be more interested in better value for money deals and different experiences while being willing to use wine for different consumption occasions eg business culture.
