The concept of payment cards with a revolving line of credit is not common in Austria and even unknown to most consumers. When Austrians speak of credit cards (Kreditkarten), they are usually referring to charge cards.
Growth in credit cards is expected to remain on a solid level, whilst remaining behind debit cards and charge cards in all areas over the forecast period as a whole. Even so, it is expected that the role of credit cards will increase over the forecast period in Austria at the expense of charge cards as issuers continue to promote revolving credit.
The introduction of MasterCard Debit in debit cards in April 2019 could have a significantly negative impact on credit cards going forward. Rather than their financial aspects, their wide acceptance abroad and online was the main reason for Austrian consumers to take out credit or charge cards in addition to their obligatory debit card.
Visa is expected to remain the leading operator in terms of number of credit cards in circulation over the forecast period, followed by MasterCard and DC Bank. Despite their presence in charge cards, American Express and JCB do not currently offer any credit cards in Austria but could enter the category over the forecast period, although this is regarded as unlikely.
In terms of issuing banks, Erste Bank der oesterreichischen Sparkassen had the highest number of credit cards in circulation at the end of the review period. It has recently become one of only a handful of banks promoting actual credit cards with revolving credit.
Diners Club recorded the most significant gain in operator market share in terms of the number of credit cards in circulation in 2018 as the bank continued to expand its Best Buy feature, which is essentially an optional revolving line of credit. Best Buy is finally also available for most co-branded Diners Club cards, which is a substantial part of the company’s business.
