Financial cards, including credit cards, were benefitting from the government’s popular cashless payments campaign that was carried out during 2019-2020. Consumers were able to earn rebates on purchases when spending using non-cash payment methods, boosting transactions made with financial cards and QR code apps in what has traditionally been a cash-heavy payments market.
Credit cards, accounting for more than half of financial cards payment transactions value, were experiencing increased use during the pandemic as consumers looked for the most hygienic ways of making in-person payments at points of sales. With cash seen as being less hygienic, and a possible way of spreading the virus, non-cash payments were preferred instead.
However, with many consumers becoming more careful with their spending in the midst of a pandemic as well as the uncertain economic outlook due to anti-COVID-19 measures such as stay-at-home orders and retail, foodservice and entertainment closures, consumer spending as a whole will see a marked decline in 2020. This will include spending on credit cards, which will see a decline in overall transactions value in 2020.
