Prior to the emergence of the pandemic, credit cards was a positively performing category, which was supported by a healthy economic environment in Portugal, and the number of financial institutions that were opening up their credit lines following years of restrictive access to credit in the country. Increasing merchant acceptance on credit cards had continued as a result of 2015’s legislation that had capped the merchant fee at 0.
Commercial credit cards experienced a more significant decline in 2020 in number of cards in circulation, number of transactions and transaction value compared to personal credit cards. This trend was driven by the number of businesses which experienced financial difficulties and reduced activity as a result of the pandemic and subsequent lockdown, while others encouraged employees to adopt work from home policies wherever possible.
The strong portfolio of co-badged personal credit cards continued to support the overall leadership of Banco BNP Paribas Personal Finance SA in 2019, with the issuer gaining further share in both number of cards in circulation and transaction value, in addition to share gain for Mastercard as an operator. In fact, co-badged retailer brands continued to boost the penetration of credit cards in the country towards the end of the review period such as Sonae’s Universo (issued by Banco BNP Paribas), Inditex’s Affinity, and the IKEA card all maintaining high popularity amongst Portuguese consumers.
