In line with trends evident in much of packaged food, Japanese consumers are shifting towards smaller pack sizes in processed meat and seafood. This shift, which is especially evident with regard to shelf stable products, is mainly due to shrinking household sizes, an ageing population and accelerating consumer lifestyles.
Despite the overall declining use of metal food cans within shelf stable seafood, demand for 50g metal food cans within this product category is set to gain ground over the forecast period in line with the popularity of smaller pack sizes among local consumers. The chief reason for favouring smaller portions is their compatibility with health-conscious dietary choices.
The increased emphasis on convenience is encouraging manufacturers of shelf stable meat and shelf stable seafood to switch from metal food cans to plastic pouches and flexible packaging, respectively. As well as being lighter and thus easier to transport than metal food cans, plastic pouch packaging is also perceived as being easier to dispose of – metal food cans must be washed before being disposed of in some regions of Japan.
