In the home care industry, consumers are increasingly demanding that the products are made from natural ingredients and that the packaging is eco-friendly. The demand for fresh milk in 2021 forced companies to manufacture larger pack sizes, but, at the same time, consumers are demanding smaller pack sizes of carbonates as they become increasingly aware of the potentially harmful effects of these products.
The dairy industry, which saw its packaging unit volume growth slow slightly but remain positive in 2021, has increasingly been seeing packaging focussing on convenience. Cheese has seen lighter and more convenient packaging, with thin wall plastic containers and peel-off plastic for small packs of sliced hard cheese growing in popularity as alternatives to flexible plastic.
PET bottles dominate soft drinks packaging for a number of reasons, including their light weight, low levels of breakability and the fact that they are easy to consume on the go, making them a convenient option. Moreover, larger PET bottles are also popular as they offer a lower unit price per litre, keeping consumers happy.
Even though there are emerging pack types like metal beverage cans and PET bottles in the alcoholic drinks industry, the glass bottle remains the most popular pack type among manufacturers. For domestic lager, glass bottles are preferred as they are non-porous and non-toxic, thus preserving the quality of the beer.
The importance of personal hygiene for adults and children during the pandemic increased drastically, with this spilling over into 2021 as well. Sales of toothpaste increased as there was a perception that oral hygiene could help to prevent some ailments and diseases.
With Romanians still being very careful about maintaining health and hygiene, home care continued to grow in 2021. HDPE bottles saw continued demand as they are main pack type for many home care products, like bathroom cleaners, floor cleaners and multipurpose cleaners.
