About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Direct selling in Hungary declined by 2% in current value during 2013 as Hungary’s consumers reduced their budgets even further and as the country’s leading direct selling companies focused more on maintaining the loyalty of existing customers rather than generating fresh demand among new consumers. Nevertheless, the declines recorded in direct selling during 2013 represented a significant improvement from the current value CAGR of -7% recorded over the entire review period as Hungary’s direct selling companies continue to suffer from slightly negative reputations. The negative image of direct selling derives mainly from pushy sales agents not following the codes of ethics which form the core of direct selling and the overpriced products.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Avon Cosmetics Hungary maintained the leading position in direct selling in 2013 with a 28% value share. The company’s success in the channel can be largely attributed to its very wide network of sales agents, the high quality and reasonable prices of its beauty and personal care products and the wide scope of its products range, which ensures that a wide range of consumer needs are covered. The company’s strong promotional activity, which includes sales events and hostess promotions in high consumer foot traffic areas, combined with Avon agents establishing small kiosks in shopping centres and hypermarkets and the increasing presence of Avon agents in internet retailing to promote the perception that Avon is a consumer goods brand which offers high-quality products rather than a mere direct selling company.

PROSPECTS

  • Direct selling is expected to decline in constant value at a CAGR of -4% over the forecast period. Although this decline is set to be a more favourable performance than the -11% constant value CAGR recorded in the channel over the entire review period as Hungary suffered the worst of the economic recession, the overall outlook for direct selling remains far from promising.
