  • The I Quit anti-smoking campaign was launched in Singapore by the Health Promotion Board (HPB) in 2011, but in 2013 Ogilvy & Mather Singapore revamped the campaign in newspapers and on other social media platforms. The anti-smoking campaign, which was displayed at train stations and in full-page newspaper advertisements, encouraged 3,400 smokers to sign up in 2013, the number being double that in 2011. Six months after signing up, 14% of the campaign’s participants remained non-smokers, compared to 10% in 2011. The higher percentage was due to the established campaign garnering better familiarity among consumers, especially following the new marketing methods.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Johnson & Johnson Pte Ltd maintained its leadership position in NRT smoking cessation aids in Singapore in 2014, with its Nicorette brand accounting for a 65% value share. Nicorette dominated NRT gum and NRT patches with value shares of 90% and 53% respectively; it also accounted for almost all NRT inhalators sales. As NRT gum was the preferred format among smokers in Singapore, Nicorette benefited from the highest brand level of awareness.

PROSPECTS

  • Sales of NRT smoking cessation aids are expected to rise at a 1% CAGR at constant 2014 prices over the forecast period, to reach SGD2.2 million by 2019. Value growth will remain stable and slow, but positive as the Government is expected to ramp up efforts to encourage smokers to quit. From the success of the I Quit campaign of 2013, the HPB aims to cut the number of Singapore resident smokers between the ages of 18 and 69 to 10% by 2020, down from 14% in 2010.
