After many years of low and stable growth, apparel and footwear suffered a significant decline in both retail volume and current value terms in 2020. This was because of the COVID-19 lockdown in the first half of the year, which saw the closure of the vast majority of physical points of sale, including single and multi-brand stores and shopping centres.
The government implemented an initial 30-day restriction on all non-essential travel across the Canada-US border on 21 March 2020, which has been subsequently extended several times. While international flights are still operating, air travel into the country by anyone other than Canadian residents, the immediate family members of Canadian residents, or US citizens has been prohibited since 18 March, with these restrictions further tightened on 21 March to bar any US citizen not travelling on essential business.
Canadian footwear player Aldo Group continued to lead apparel and footwear in 2020. However, its sales and value share plummeted, and it declared bankruptcy.
Non-essential retailers were closed during the COVID-19 lockdown period from mid-March to early May. Hypermarkets such as Walmart were deemed essential and continued operating, and benefited as they were the only physical channels available to buy apparel and footwear.
Sales of apparel and footwear are set to rebound to strong growth in 2021. However, the level of sales seen in 2019, before the emergence of COVID-19, is not predicted to be reached in this year, with 2022 the earliest this will happen.
