The lockdown seen in Q1 of 2020 in response to COVID-19 had a huge impact on sales of apparel and footwear in China. With non-essential stores forced to close in most areas many manufacturers and retailers posted huge losses.
There was a strict lockdown in Hubei province in China from 23 January to 8 April, while other provinces imposed different social distancing policies and partial lockdowns. Movement in and out of the worst-hit provinces was banned until 4 February, with a 14-day quarantine period required for those moving between provinces.
With many stores closed during the lockdown, and with foot traffic down even after restrictions were lifted, a key focus for most companies was expanding and improving their online presence. Most players already had an online presence before the outbreak of COVID-19, but at least in the first quarter of the year e-commerce became their main focus.

Apparel and footwear bounced back strongly after restrictions started to be eased, with sales expected to be boosted by delayed purchases in 2021. As consumers return to school and the workplace there will likely a rise in demand for more formal attire and footwear.
