Sales of home laundry appliances are closely linked to the performance of the housing and construction market. Due to the poor performance of the latter, the category continued to perform poorly in 2018.

Freestanding format continues to outperform built-in

One of the most significant trends in major appliances in the UK in recent years has been the increased demand for the built-in format at the expense of freestanding appliances. However, while this is true in large cooking appliances and refrigeration appliances, the opposite is the case in home laundry appliances.

In October 2018, Haier announced the acquisition of Candy which will become effective from 2019 onwards. Haier’s presence in the UK and in Western Europe in general remains limited and Haier plans to use Candy as a platform to boost its penetration in this region.
