COVID-19 had a drastic negative impact on all categories of consumer foodservice in the United Arab Emirates in 2020. This was primarily due to the impact of national lockdown restrictions which meant that businesses in this industry had to close their doors do eat-in customers for long periods of time in order to prevent crowds of people from gathering in consumer foodservice outlets.
From 23 March, the government urged people to only leave their homes to go to work or in an emergency. On 31 March, Al Ras, one of Dubai's most densely populated areas, was placed under lockdown for two weeks, preventing all residents from leaving or entering the area.
Many of the leading performers in consumer foodservice focused on introducing or expanding their online platforms, apps, and home delivery services in 2020. These services were key to success in 2020 as they allowed companies to continue to reach their consumers even whilst their outlets were closed, and consumers were restricted to staying at home during the COVID-19 crisis.
Independent foodservice operators were more vulnerable to the effects of the COVID-19 crisis in 2020 than their chained counterparts as they lacked the robust support systems that chained players in consumer foodservice have. Without global or national strategies to follow, independent foodservice operators found it more difficult to adapt quickly to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially the many operators who did not have an online presence going into the pandemic in 2020.
The UAE began its vaccination roll-out at the end of 2020 which is a good sign for the recovery of the sheikhdom in epidemiological terms. The successful roll-out of the vaccine in the UAE will have a positive impact on consumer confidence in returning to consumer foodservice outlets in the forecast period and will also mean that international consumers will be more likely to travel to the sheikhdom in the coming years.
