Executive Summary

Jun 2019
PROSPECTS
Liquid concentrates drive overall concentrates

Over the review period, liquid concentrates gained in popularity due to offering concentrates with natural fruit sugars and ingredients. A number of brands expanded or introduced new, natural fruit liquid concentrates.

Powder concentrates continues to record a poor performance

In comparison, powder concentrates have experienced little innovation, with the exception of the development of sports-based powder concentrates. However, mainstream powder concentrates continue to come under the scrutiny of containing too much sugar, despite reduced-sugar variants being available.

Volume growth based on larger pack sizes

Despite value growth continuing to drop, mainly due to cheap regular powder concentrates, and private label liquid concentrates, volume, on the other hand, is expected to show positive growth. As consumers gravitate towards liquid concentrates, volume pack sizes are much larger compared to powder concentrates products.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Diversification within Hansells Food Group Ltd portfolio

Hansells Food Group Ltd continued to lead concentrates due to diverse and ever expanding ranges in both liquid and powder concentrates. Within powder concentrates the company has been a key driver in the introduction of reduced-sugar products with the Vita Fresh brand and also in sports powder concentrates with Vitasport.

Domestic brand Barker’s performs well

Barker Fruit Processors Ltd (known as Barker's of Geraldine) has performed exceptionally well due to its continued expansion into real fruit syrups. The main focus in the latter half of the review period has been on the development of blackcurrant-based fruit syrup.

New owner for Cerebos Gregg's Ltd’s portfolio

Since 2017, the future for a number of brands within the Cerebos Gregg's company portfolio was unknown, when parent company Suntory Holdings Ltd placed a number of business units within the company up for sale. This included the powder concentrates brand Raro.
