Craft beer in Guatemala has seen growing consumption and increasing consumer awareness, albeit remaining somewhat of a niche. Established players such as El Zapote, Príncipe Gris, Antigua Cerveza and Cervecería Catorce have strengthened their businesses and were able to survive the threat that COVID-19 presented.
Beer consumption is expected to continue growing over the forecast period, with beer still seen to have plenty of room for further development. The leading players have remained very active with their activities, with regular new product launches, sales promotions and on-trade and off-trade promotions as well.
Small local grocers will remain key for the growth and development of beer, with most consumers still preferring this channel when buying beer, especially for single-unit impulse purchases. It has been a tradition among low to mid-low-income consumers (mainly men) to gather around near small local grocers and drink with friends or family.

Beer
An alcoholic drink usually brewed from malt, sugar, hops and water and fermented with yeast. Some beers are made by fermenting a cereal, especially barley, and therefore not flavoured by hops. Alcohol content for beer is varied – anything up to and over 14% ABV (alcohol by volume), although 3.5% to 5% is most common. Beer is the aggregation of lager, dark beer, stout and non/low alcohol beer.
