It is expected high inflation and weakened purchasing power will continue to subdue demand for beer in Hungary during the early part of the forecast period. Off- and on-trade volume growth rates look set to slow in 2023 due to further hikes in unit prices and the general cost of living.
In recent years, the growing preference for mid-priced and premium beer products among Hungarians has led many large breweries to rationalise their economy portfolios. However, this trend looks set to be reversed over the forecast period, with producers expected to widen their offer of cheaper options as inflationary pressures make drinkers more likely to trade down.
Non/low alcohol beer is projected to be the most dynamic performer in terms of total volume sales growth over the forecast period. It will continue to benefit from Hungary’s zero-tolerance drink driving policy and the fact that rising health awareness is increasingly leading people to reduce their alcohol intake.

Beer
An alcoholic drink usually brewed from malt, sugar, hops and water and fermented with yeast. Some beers are made by fermenting a cereal, especially barley, and therefore not flavoured by hops. Alcohol content for beer is varied – anything up to and over 14% ABV (alcohol by volume), although 3.5% to 5% is most common. Beer is the aggregation of lager, dark beer, stout and non/low alcohol beer.
