EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Upbeat forecast for economy

Latest economic data suggests a cyclical upturn has commenced as strong domestic demand continues to drive growth. Optimism amongst Norwegian households returned during summer 2010 with a recent survey undertaken by the Norwegian finance organisation Finansnæringens Fellesorganisasjon (Finance Norway) showing consumer optimism is now close to levels seen before the global financial crisis. Low interest rates and stable employment has helped fuel domestic demand particularly in the housing market, where prices have been pushed skyward. The low interest rates have also enabled households to enjoy higher discretionary income and greater purchasing power; however, this has not translated into increased spending at the cash register. Recent retail sales data from Statistics Norway show growth over 2010 has been sluggish, which suggests that as economic events in Europe continue to unfold many Norwegians remain cautious about the potential impact those events may have on Norway.

Nordito AS merges with PBS to form NETS

In September 2010 a new Nordic payment company called NETS was launched following a merger between Norwegian Nordito, which is the parent company of BBS and Teller, and the holding company of the Danish company PBS. The merger unites the three leading Nordic companies within payment cards, payment solutions and the exchange of payment information into one group. The merger now means NETS is the leading player in the Nordic market and has a strong competitive platform from which to also compete in the Northern European market.

BankID enables consumers to swap banks online

Bank customers can now swap banking service providers in under a minute thanks to a newly developed system within the existing BankID security product. Most leading banks intend to offer the service in 2010; it allows the opening of a new bank account online with no requirement to sign papers or meet bank staff.

Transaction fees impact consumer behaviour

MasterCard and Visa cardholders now face potential transaction fees when using their cards. The new ruling, which came into force in January and falls under the EU, gives merchants the option to pass on incurred transaction costs to cardholders. Previously the cost was absorbed by the merchants themselves. So far no major retailer has yet introduced charges. In a first, SAS Airport Bus Services announced in October 2010 that preference will be given to credit cards and co-branded debit cards for payment. Customers wishing to pay using cash will incur an additional charge of NOK10 per ticket.

SpareBank 1 Northern Norway set to phase out over-the-counter cash withdrawals

SpareBank 1 Northern Norway has announced it intends to close most of its over-the-counter cash services by 2012. Banks are looking for improved efficiency and cost reduction with manual cash transactions in branches approaching redundancy due to other cash withdrawal alternatives operating in the market.

Telenor driving m-commerce payment applications

On the horizon are mobile phone banking applications which are incorporating NFC technology enabling contactless payments. Referred to as a “mobile wallet” this payment instrument will be a formidable rival to the traditional payment card in Norway. One of the market leaders in the new technology is Norway’s largest telecommunications operator Telenor, which currently has a number of m-commerce-related projects in development.

  • Owners of ATM terminals are generally Norwegian banks that outsource the operation to specialist IT payment companies. The two main operators are Banking & Business Solutions (BBS) and EDB. In September 2009, the BBS parent company Nordito merged with Danish electronic payment services provider PBS and formed a new company called NETS Holding. The new company is now a formidable player in the European electronic payment services market with greater leverage in all areas, including ATMs.

PROSPECTS

  • ATMs face a difficult period ahead and are likely to continue with sluggish growth in both distribution of ATMs and transactions. Stagnant innovation and strong competition from rivals such as POS terminal cashback and the increasingly popular in-store banking will continue to place pressure on transaction share held by ATMs. The convenience of payment cards will also continue to further erode the need to carry cash looking ahead.

  • The frequency of usage for charge cards remained relatively unchanged in 2010 with charge cards failing to capture potential transaction share growth the same way credit cards did. Charge cards are suffering heavy competition from the larger credit card category, which is proving far more popular amongst card users.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • There are four charge card operators in Norway: Diners Club, American Express, MasterCard and Visa. Diners Club and American Express dominate both the commercial and personal market with Diners slightly ahead with a 34% share in the number of cards whilst American Express accounts for only 30%.

PROSPECTS

  • The outlook for store cards over the review period is moderate. Growth in transaction volume and card circulation will remain sluggish over the review period whilst transaction value will take a little longer to recover but will slowly pick up as economy gathers momentum.

Credit Card Transactions in Norway - Category Analysis

  • During the review period, personal credit cards experienced the highest transaction growth of any card category. Reasonably stable employment conditions and higher discretionary income helped bolster consumer confidence and led to transactions increasing by 17% in current value and 18% in volume terms to reach NOK67.3 billion and 70 million, respectively, in 2010. The growth rate, however, eased compared to the previous year as not all households found themselves in a comfortable financial situation in 2010.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • The credit card category is dominated by two operators: Visa Europe and MasterCard International. Visa maintains the leadership position, holding a 54% share in terms of credit card numbers at the end of 2009.

PROSPECTS

  • The outlook for credit cards over the review period is positive. Transactions growth will remain high but with slowing growth. Circulation growth will remain fairly moderate as the market is reaching a saturation point similar to that of debit cards.

Debit Transactions in Norway - Category Analysis

  • The ongoing economic slowdown has had little impact on debit card spending, which has seen record-high transaction volume and value. In 2010 debit cards led the way, accounting for 63% of total card transactions by value and 75% of transactions by volume. Of the banked population every Norwegian used a debit card 180 times on the average, representing a 9% jump from 2009.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • The debit card issuer market is characterised by a handful of dominant players and quite a few smaller players scattered regionally. All card issuers must fall under the national debit card scheme called BankAxept. Most cards are then co-branded with either Visa or MasterCard, which allows the card to be used outside of Norway. The largest issuer by some margin is also Norway’s largest bank, DnB NOR, which holds 33% of debit card issued. Nordea is second with 10% and third is the online bank SkandiaBanken with 9%.

PROSPECTS

  • Debit cards are proving reasonably resilient despite the slowing economy and it is expected that over the forecast period card transaction growth will remain positive with an expected CAGR of 9% for transaction volume and 2% for transaction constant value out to 2015.

Pre-Paid Card Transactions in Norway - Category Analysis

  • Closed loop pre-paid cards continue to see stronger growth thanks to the introduction of Norsk Tipping’s (the state lottery and betting company) playing card in February 2009. The playing card was introduced to enforce player registration and improve gambling habits. Due to compulsory registration, uptake has been very swift with 1.9 million Norwegians now active card members. The Norsk Tipping card accounted for almost all growth of cards in circulation in closed loop pre-pay cards.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • After the departure of SEB from open loop pre-paid cards in 2009, DnB NOR was left as the clear leader with 42% of open loop pre-paid cards issued. Second was SpareBank1Gruppen with 23% and third was Convenient Cards, which operates the SpendOn gift card, with 18%.

PROSPECTS

  • The outlook for pre-paid cards is reasonably bright. Both transaction and circulation growth will remain positive over the review period, but with easing growth.

The latter offer far greater merchant acceptance choice and often have better, more encompassing card discount programmes attached. For this reason store card circulation growth has come under immense pressure, resulting in a decline since 2004 as more and more card users opt for a credit card over a store card.

  • Oil companies and large retail chains are the main issuers of store cards.

PROSPECTS

  • The outlook for store cards over the review period is moderate. Growth in transactions and card circulation will remain sluggish over the review period but will slowly pick up as economy gathers momentum. Company analysis

At a global level, our company research combines our mix of industry interaction and use of secondary sources such as annual accounts, broker reports, financial press and databases. From a data perspective, the aim is to build “top-down” estimates of major players’ total global and regional sales.

Working with historic trends of 15 years or more, a key aspect of our trade survey is to engage industry insider views of the next five years. Will volumes maintain their historic trend? Will price increases or falls of recent years continue, accelerate or slow down? Will increasing demand for one product cannibalise sales of another?

Forecasts represent many of the essential conclusions we have reached about the current state of the market, how it works and how it behaves under different macro and micro conditions. Our written analysis will state the assumptions and the trade opinion behind whether our predictions are optimistic or pessimistic, so that clients can use our statistical forecasts with confidence.

Data validation

All data is subjected to an exhaustive review process, at country, regional and global levels.

The interpretation and review of sources and data inputs forms a central part of the collaboration between industry teams and country researchers. Numbers are delivered to regional and global offices with an audit trail of sources and calculations to allow for a thorough evaluation of data sense and integrity.

Upon completion of the country review phase, data is then reviewed on a comparative basis at regional and then at a global level. Comparative checks are carried out on per capita consumption and spending levels, growth rates, patterns of category and subcategory breakdowns and distribution of sales by channel. Top-down estimates are reviewed against bottom-up regional and global market and company sales totals.

Where marked differences are seen between proximate country markets or ones at similar developmental levels, supplementary research is conducted in the relevant countries to confirm and/or amend those findings. This process ensures international comparability across the database, that consistent category and subcategory definitions have been used and that all data has been correctly tested. We make sure that possible discrepancies between different published sources have been reconciled and that our interpretation of opinion and expectation from each country’s trade sources has been applied to form a coherent international pattern.
