About this Report

Executive Summary

Trends

  • Baby food continued to record growth even though birth rates carried on falling, due to the increasing number of women joining the workforce. They generally tend to replace breastfeeding with milk formula at the end of their maternity leave and often purchase prepared baby food in order to save on cooking time, making it easier to handle the rest of their responsibilities inside and out of home.

Competitive Landscape

  • Nestlé México led baby food with 64% value share in 2015. In milk formula, it owns the Nan and Nido brands and it is also very relevant in baby food excluding milk formula due to Gerber, Nestum and Cerelac. The IEPS – Impuesto Especial SobreProducción y Servicios (Special Tax Over Production and Services) – which imposed an 8% rate on high-calorie foods in January 2014, affected Gerber products as several families experienced prices rising in several categories and had to reduce their spending. Innovations in packaging are aimed to help recovery. For example, pouches and juice caps were introduced as new alternatives for Gerber products.

Prospects

  • Baby food is expected to observe positive growth despite the expected slowdown in birth rates. The positive trend is likely to be explained by the increasingly fast-paced lifestyles that favour the growth of ready-to-eat products. This trend is the result of an increasing number of households with two working parents, which is expected to drive an increase in disposable income but to limit the available time for other activities such as cooking and feeding babies.
