After having seen demand rebound strongly over 2021-2022, footwear looks set to experience a slowdown in total volume sales growth in 2023 as consumption patterns stabilise. Increased caution around discretionary spending will also subdue demand in the short term as high inflation continues to drive up prices and the general cost of living.
Sneakers are expected to be among the best performing product types within footwear over the forecast period. Many Hungarians have recently developed a greater appreciation for the comfort such products provide while spending more time at home due to the fallout of the pandemic, and demand should continue to be bolstered by the athleisure, streetwear and smart casual fashion trends, the rising incidence of remote working and the relaxation of workplace dress codes.
With Hungarians having recently become more comfortable with online shopping due to changes brought about by the pandemic, purchases of footwear via the e-commerce channel should continue to increase steadily over the forecast period. Sales will also be buoyed by sustained investment in digital marketing activities by brand owners and multi-brand online retailers such as Zalando, About You and Answear.
