After being heavily hit by the pandemic in 2020, footwear in the US saw strong recovery across all three categories in 2021. However, as high inflation and rising geopolitical tensions were seen in the US in 2022, many consumers, especially those in low-income households, planned to decrease or had already cut their spending on footwear in anticipation of the recession.
Driven by consumers’ increasing awareness of sustainability issues and enhanced government regulation, sustainability was a popular topic in the apparel and footwear industry even before the pandemic. According to Euromonitor International’s Voice of the Consumer: Sustainability Survey, 7% of US respondents were willing to pay more for sustainably produced apparel and footwear products in 2022, up from 5% in 2021.
The COVID-19 pandemic led consumers, especially younger generations, to spend an increasing amount of time online, which in turn contributed to the boom in e-commerce. To facilitate this growth and gain opportunities, such as revenues or customer engagement, in the digital world over the forecast period, more and more brands and retailers are overhauling their investments in digital merchandising, digital products, and digital marketing channels.
