TRENDS

  • In 2014/2015 a considerable number of secondary brands of cheese began to be marketed throughout the country. The fall in the international price of powder milk since mid-2014 encouraged small companies to replace the production of powder milk with cheese, because it is a more profitable product. In a context of strong deterioration of purchasing power, these secondary brands, the average price of which is much lower, softened the fall in volume sales in 2015.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • SanCor Cooperativas Unidas and Mastellone Hnos led cheese in 2015, each with a retail value share of 20%. Whilst SanCor was the leader in hard cheese, Mastellone led soft cheese. Danone Argentina, although positioned third behind SanCor and Mastellone, was the undisputed leader in processed cheese, with a retail value share of 39% in 2015, thanks to its brand Casancrem.

PROSPECTS

  • According to trade sources, if the international price of milk powder recovers, many secondary brands which helped to sustain the consumption of soft and hard cheese could disappear in the forecast period. If the international price of milk powder increased above USD3,500 per tonne, small companies would stop producing cheese, negatively impacting consumption.
