  • Argentina is the seventh biggest cheese producer in the world, using 50% of the milk produced within the country. To strengthen its presence in the global market, it is focusing on producing cheese with a denomination of origin. One of the first in this category was Goya cheese, a hard cheese from the city of the same name in the province of Corrientes, and which is produced there by five companies, including SanCor. Cheese varieties with an Argentinian origin include Pategras, Holanda and the recently launched Chubut, which is native to Tandil in the province of Buenos Aires.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • SanCor Cooperativas Unidas Ltda leads cheese in 2014 with a 22% share of value sales, followed closely by Mastellone Hnos SA with 21%. SanCor benefits from its position as a specialist cheese producer and is particularly strong in hard cheese, processed cheese and soft cheese.

PROSPECTS

  • Given the strong penetration of Argentinian cheese in Latin America and the fact that the Argentinian market is relatively mature, producers are seeking to target the European market, which is more demanding and where it is key that products carry a denomination of origin so as to be able to compete.
