  • With a value share of 14% and sales of GEL6 million, Finnish company Valio led cheese sales in 2015. The company’s success can be attributed to the popularity of its Valio Gouda and Viola brands. In addition, the company benefits from high brand awareness and trust from local consumers as it has been operating in Georgia for many years and provides high quality products. Valio was followed by domestic manufacturer Kiziki with a value share of 6%. This company produces traditional Georgian cheese, which is packaged and sold at supermarkets.

PROSPECTS

  • The further development of cheese is likely to be affected by new regulations. From 1 August 2015, new technical regulations on dairy products will enter into force with the aim of establishing requirements for milk, milk products and milk-containing products and regulating the market placement of these products. Also, according to Georgia’s national food agency, from 2020 cheese will be sold only by formal retail stores. While these changes should positively impact the area, the impact will not be visible during the forecast period as no significant growth is expected.
