About this Report

Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • Towards the end of the review period as the economy of the United Arab Emirates recovered from the economic crisis, there was an increase in immigration from Europe and North America which fuelled demand for premium, European unpackaged hard cheese such as Parmesan, Cheddar and Gouda. Consumers from these locations are accustomed to consuming these types of cheese in their home countries and they have the disposable income to purchase these imported products in the United Arab Emirates. Thus, unpackaged hard cheese was one of the two strongest categories of cheese in terms of current retail value growth in 2013, with growth of 8%. This strong growth was supported by the wide product portfolio in unpackaged hard cheese offered in hypermarkets and supermarkets in the United Arab Emirates. The cold chain distribution and current retail value sales of these retailers increased in 2013 due to the expansion of cheese counters in these outlets.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • Kraft Foods Inc continued to lead in cheese in 2013, accounting for a retail value share of 18% and achieving a slight increase in its share on 2012. Its Kraft brand, which is offered in several variants, and its Philadelphia brand benefit from extensive distribution and strong brand equity in the United Arab Emirates. The increase in share was also supported by innovation in packaging in 2013. A major new development was reinvention of the can packaging for Kraft processed cheddar cheese. The new can design featured a ring pull, making it significantly easier to remove the cheese from the packaging. This made the product more convenient for consumers. The new design was supported by promotional campaigns in major hypermarkets. For example, a multipack of six 113g Kraft processed cheddar cheese cans was offered for AED19.50 in Carrefour outlets, which was the equivalent of purchasing five cans and receiving one for free.

PROSPECTS

  • It is expected that manufacturers in cheese will continue to drive growth through product and packaging innovation in the short term. As many consumers in the United Arab Emirates have a high level of disposable income but not much time, convenience products, such as Kraft Shredded Mozzarella Cheese and Kraft Singles from Kraft Foods Inc, are expected to drive constant retail value growth.
