  • As the leading cheese manufacturers continue to solidify their positions in the market, the distribution of cheese in the Dominican Republic is becoming more concentrated. In 2015, the top five manufacturers accounted for 86% of retail value sales. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • During World War II, Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo agreed to allow Jewish immigrants from Europe and other parts of the world into the country. During the 1940s, Jewish immigrants began to settle in Sosua on the north coast and shortly after opened a dairy processing and cheese manufacturing operation. Sosua cheese enjoys a strong and rich history in the Dominican Republic, remained the leading brand and accounted for 38% of retail value sales in 2015. National brand owner (NBO) Sigma Alimentos Dominicana maintains processing plants in Sosua, Puerto Plata and Santiago, along with distribution facilities in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Sosua, La Romana, Barahona and San Juan de la Maguana. Strong brand recognition, consumer loyalty and blanket distribution contribute to the prolonged leadership of Sosua among cheese brands.

PROSPECTS

  • The ongoing consolidation of cheese sales in the country is expected to provide a boost to value sales over the forecast period. While the five main cheese brands recorded consistently strong growth since 2011, all other brands combined recorded negative current retail value growth for much of the review period. As the major players tighten the screws on the market, competition will remain heated as the leading brands have the resources to invest in product development, distribution and marketing. Innovations in flavouring and/or packaging design could prove pivotal in securing sales share gains over the forecast period.
