Executive Summary

TRENDS

  • In terms of retail volume sales growth, cheese was the most dynamic category within dairy in 2015, driven by both packaged and unpackaged hard cheese. While cheese consumption is increasing, demanding Czech consumers prefer products imported from abroad over local ones. Thus, domestic production is decreasing, while imports of cheese are growing. In addition, Czech customers enjoy cheese specialities which is leading to the establishment of specialised cheese shops within the country.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

  • TPK (formerly Pribina) remained the leading player in cheese in 2015, accounting for a retail value sale share of 18%, followed by Madeta on a 17% share and Lactalis CZ on a 10% share. TPK’s success was attributable to its merger with Povltavske Mlekarny in 2014. Currently, the company produces its products in two factories in Hodonin and in Pribina in Pribyslav. In Hodonin, TPK manufactures the Apetito and Javor cheese brands, while in Pribina it produces Kral Syru and Pribinacek, amongst others.

PROSPECTS

  • Private label is expected to maintain its retail value sales share in cheese over the forecast period. In comparison to the average value share of private label within the EU, operators of private label in the Czech Republic have a weaker position. Strong promotions and discount events launched by established branded players, in which Czech customers can buy branded products for advantageous prices, and the low number of discounters in the country, are among the reasons underlying this. Nevertheless, planned governmental regulations to limit the bargaining power of established companies has the potential to threaten this situation over the forecast period.
