PROSPECTS
Online retailing to fuel growth and innovation

New business models are continuing to disrupt pet care. This has been intensified by the proliferation of online retailing.

Hemp-based products could drive value growth in pet supplements

Similar to the rise of hemp-based food and drink products, hemp is becoming an increasingly popular ingredient in pet supplements. Following on from the boom in the US, the Australian market is becoming more and more penetrable, as consumers understand the benefits of hemp as a superfood.

New product launches follow the pet humanisation trend

In 2018, Therabis Australia launched a range of treat supplements which help with joint mobility, stress and itching issues. In addition, it launched Therabis Calm and Quiet, which is a formula designed to help dogs remain calm or cope with stressful situations.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Merial Australia leads pet products with Frontline

In 2019, Merial Australia maintained its lead in pet products. It continued to lead pet healthcare with its Frontline Plus brand.

Nestlé Purina PetCare benefits from a wide product range

Nestlé Purina PetCare accounted for a sizeable share of sales in pet products in 2018, due to its presence in more than one category. Purina Total Care is its biggest brand, which has a strong position in both pet healthcare and other pet products, although it also has Purina Tidy cats in cat litter and Purina Petlife in other pet products.

Private label expected to flatline as pet owners choose pampering

The review period showed that the consumer appetite for private label pet care products is shrinking. In line with the humanisation and premiumisation of pet care, consumers are willing to spend more on products for their pets.
