Similar to the rise of hemp-based food and drink products, hemp is becoming an increasingly popular ingredient in pet supplements. Following on from the boom in the US, the Australian market is becoming more and more penetrable, as consumers understand the benefits of hemp as a superfood.
In 2018, Therabis Australia launched a range of treat supplements which help with joint mobility, stress and itching issues. In addition, it launched Therabis Calm and Quiet, which is a formula designed to help dogs remain calm or cope with stressful situations.
In 2019, Merial Australia maintained its lead in pet products. It continued to lead pet healthcare with its Frontline Plus brand.
Nestlé Purina PetCare accounted for a sizeable share of sales in pet products in 2018, due to its presence in more than one category. Purina Total Care is its biggest brand, which has a strong position in both pet healthcare and other pet products, although it also has Purina Tidy cats in cat litter and Purina Petlife in other pet products.
The review period showed that the consumer appetite for private label pet care products is shrinking. In line with the humanisation and premiumisation of pet care, consumers are willing to spend more on products for their pets.
