Retail sales in sports drinks have been well maintained over the time of the pandemic, both in 2020 and 2021, in line with the rising health trends inspiring consumers to exercise more often. As such, many consumers embraced sports drinks to promote faster rehydration and the replenishment of electrolytes after working out.
Suntory PepsiCo Vietnam Beverage Co Ltd maintains its significant lead in sports drinks in 2021, thanks to its top 7-Up Revive brand and its backing from the global powerhouse of PepsiCo Inc. However, it is second-placed Otsuka Thang Nutrition Co Ltd with brand Pocari Sweat which increased its shares in 2021.
Unlike the boost seen to retail sales, foodservice sales in sports drinks slumped into negative-figure declines. During the pandemic lockdowns, all on-trade channels were required to close and thus consumers switched their consumption from foodservice to off-trade.
Overall recovery in sports drinks is expected to be in line with the loosening of pandemic restrictions, enabling consumers to frequent gymnasiums and sports centres and attend larger-scale sporting events. Additionally, the rising health and wellness trends will also help support sales, as they continue to encourage consumers to take more exercise in order to remain as fit and healthy as possible.
The percentage of sales in sports drinks is set to remain heavily concentrated in off-trade channels over the forecast period, with on-trade only accounting for a small share. This is because sports drinks are not as traditionally popular through on-trade, as they are consumed in line with exercise activities as opposed to for pleasure per se.
Although Suntory PepsiCo Vietnam Beverage Co Ltd is not expected to see any direct challenges to its position and Otsuka Thang Nutrition Co Ltd is the only other player holding double-digit shares, it is expected that stronger competition amongst the smaller players will appear in the category over the forecast period. This is expected to be focussed on promotions and discounts through off-trade channels such as supermarkets and hypermarkets, with even some competition being seen between the leading brands as they vie to make their brand stand out on the store shelves.

Sports Drinks
The choice of sports drink usually depends on the provision of fluids, carbohydrates or both. Included into this subsector are isotonic, hypotonic and hypertonic sports drinks. Isotonic are products that replace lost body fluids, electrolytes (sodium, potassium and chlorides) and glucose in similar concentrations to existing body fluid without causing either swelling or shrinkage of cells. These products usually contain about 5-8% carbohydrate and are intended to be consumed during exercise and/or heat exposure. Hypotonic this product is a weaker solution than your body fluid. These drinks contain less carbohydrate and therefore have lower osmolality (fewer dissolved particles than blood). These drinks help the body to speed up water absorption and are best used when you need urgent fluid replacement, as in after exercise. These drinks are not the best for energy replacement. Hypertonic - this drink is a stronger solution than your body fluid. These drinks are designed to replace and maintain energy levels during exercise of at least one hour. They are absorbed slowly and therefore are not appropriate for fluid replacement. Leading brands in off-trade volume include Gatorade, Powerade and Aquarius.
