Following the outbreak of COVID-19, childrenswear will see both declining current value and volume sales in 2020 overall. However, in comparison to womenswear and menswear, childrenswear has been less severely impacted.
Another factor leading to both decreasing demand and current value sales of childrenswear has been the closure of schools during lockdown. In a bid to control the spread of the virus, the government closed all schools in Romania for some time and students were receiving online classes from home instead.
Schools were closed for a large majority of 2020, however the government decided to reopen them for the beginning of the school year in September 2020. Usually between the months of August and September there is a peak in sales of childrenswear due to parents purchasing school uniforms etc for their children’s school year.
Childrenswear is expected to rebound immediately at the beginning of the forecast period. This will largely be a result of the reopening of schools and general return to pre pandemic norms.
Over the forecast period, there is expected to be a stronger focus on sustainability within childrenswear. Currently, fast fashion is prevalent throughout most apparel product areas, as consumers can find lower-priced clothing items, and many Romanian parents do not care that these garments will not last.
The development of social media and technology will continue to have a positive effect on childrenswear. Inspired by blogs or Instagram pages, parents tend to dress their children in fashionable clothing, especially younger parents.
