2020 and 2021 were years of extraordinary growth for energy drinks in Chile, driven by government aid which helped to inject substantial money into the local economy. However, with the end of financial help and the stagnating economy, the demand for non-essential goods is becoming more vulnerable.
Although demand for reduced sugar energy drinks is expected to continue increasing over the forecast period, driven by Monster Energy, regular energy drinks will remain the overwhelming preference of local consumers, in addition to recording the more dynamic growth. Similar to trends noted in carbonates, the transition to reduced or sugar-free versions of energy drinks is proving a challenge in Chile, due to habit persistence and sensitivity to flavour changes.
Supermarkets was traditionally a strong channel for energy drinks in Chile, offering brands greater exposure to mainly mid- and high-income consumers. However, small local grocers is gradually strengthening its overall dominance of distribution.
