Producers of energy drinks could face a more defined legislative environment in the coming years as the local government attempts to regulate drinks with high sugar content. This is partly to tackle youth obesity levels seen in the country, considering that younger generations are traditionally the highest consumers of energy drinks in Spain.
The traditional consumer base of energy drinks in Spain – young males – is expanding to include a wider variety of consumers, with this trend expected to continue, encouraged by factors such as flavour innovation. In addition, the category faces some competition from other soft drinks such as functional bottled water and sports drinks.
While volume and value sales are expected to further grow through on-trade channels over the forecast period due to recovery of sales in night-time establishments, off-trade will remain the dominant channel for energy drinks and on-the-go and impulse purchases will remain the main source of sales for the category. The full recovery of inbound tourist numbers to pre-pandemic levels will be an important factor for on-trade.
