As processed meat and seafood reaches maturity as a category, sales were quite robust in the face of COVID-19. Although the economic crises in Algeria did lower demand for some products, processed meat and seafood is expected to benefit from the fact that products in the category have an established customer base and quite high levels of brand loyalty.
The best performers in processed seafood were international players such as Crustamar, Pescamar Algeria SpA and Belfrost, while processed meat was dominated by the local manufacturers, such as Bellat - Conserverie des Viandes d’Algerie and Simpex Afric SARL. The domination of local players in processed meat is due to the only significant product being cashir sausages, and other local sausages which are traditional Algerian foods.
The economy brands offered by domestic players completely dominate chilled processed food, with no other types of brands recording sales of significance in 2020. Standard brands account for the bulk of sales within frozen processed food, as all products are currently imported, making it uneconomical to offer economy brands, given the high import costs.
While rising unit prices will drive value growth over the forecast period, retail volume growth will see an increase due to the rise of busy lifestyles in Algeria. This rise in busy lifestyles is particularly true for the female population, as more women are participating in the workforce, having less time to prepare meals from scratch.
Slower growth is predicted over the forecast period due to the growing maturity of the category. This maturity is combined with economic hardship, which is predicted to see consumers purchasing power decline further.
The supermarket and hypermarket distribution channels are expected to expand over the forecast period, and small grocery retailer outlets are set to modernise. These changes mean there will be more retail outlets that have the appropriate equipment for the storage of frozen and chilled processed meat and seafood.
