PROSPECTS
Effect of ASF and the subsequent ban of imported meat from affected countries continues to negatively impact processed meat in the Philippines

Volume growth of processed meat slowed down in 2019, as the category continues to feel the impact of the African Swine Fever (ASF), which struck in 2018. In order to protect the local hog industry against ASF, the Department of Agriculture in 2018 prohibited the importation of processed meat and raw meat from countries with known ASF outbreaks.

New brands and products include Robina Farms’ tocino, Argentina Corned Chicken and Bay of Gold premium tuna

Several new brands and products have arrived in the country’s processed meat and seafood landscape. Robina Farms, launched within the processed meat arena in 2019, is the brand of Robina Agri Partners (unit of Universal Robina Corp), which sells fresh meat and fresh eggs.

Responding to rising demand for vegan food, Pristine Solutions brings Beyond Meat into the Philippines

In 2019, the domestic distributor Pristine Solutions responded to the growing vegan trend in the Philippines by partnering with Green Monday Hong Kong to bring products from the popular vegan meat producer Beyond Meat and from the vegan cheese maker Daiya into Manila. Green Monday is a start-up company that aims to fight climate change and global food insecurity by focusing on sustainability.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
The Purefoods-Hormel Co strengthens its lead in processed meat as it transitions towards using its own processing facilities

The Purefoods-Hormel Co maintains its leadership within processed meat and seafood on the strength of its near domination in processed meat, where its value sales grew by double digits in 2019 for the second consecutive year. Its favourable standing is driven by the wide product portfolio of its key brand, Purefoods, which gives it a presence in all formats (shelf stable, chilled, frozen) of processed red meat and processed poultry.

Johnsonville and Frabelle Fishing Corp enter into a joint venture agreement

The American company Johnsonville LLC and a local company, Frabelle Fishing Corp, entered into a joint venture agreement in 2019. Johnsonville will benefit from the agreement since importing its products into the Philippines has required that it pays a high (40%) tariff, placing a premium on the price of its products.

Processed seafood developments include a new tuna factory and expanded distribution in the Visayas and Mindanao region

In processed seafood, two significant developments were noted in 2018-2019. Century Pacific Food made a capital investment of PHP1.
