Herbal/traditional products faces strong competition from unpackaged alternatives

The biggest challenge facing sales of herbal/traditional products in Egypt is the widespread sale of unpackaged herbal/traditional remedies at very low prices via traditional shops known as attars. These unpackaged products, which are not covered by Euromonitor International research, are purchased mainly by low-income consumers seeking rapid relief from minor ailments and who are not overly concerned about the low hygiene standards that are common in attars.

Herbal/traditional paediatric dietary supplements posted the strongest value growth of any category of herbal/traditional products in 2019. However , it should be noted that sales in this category are rising from a very low base.

Herbal/traditional products remains a highly fragmented category, with local companies maintaining most of the leading positions. Pharco Pharmaceuticals remains the overall leader in value terms, followed by Pharaonia Pharmaceutical and Amriya for Pharmaceutical Industries.

Strict regulation and price controls continue to stifle innovation and new product development

Herbal/traditional products witnessed few new product launches in 2019. The only notable launch was Pharco’s introduction of Rosaseef, a herbal product for the treatment of premenstrual pains.
