Executive Summary

Oct 2019
PROSPECTS
With the birth rate continuing to head south this means a shrinking consumer base for paediatric consumer health

The birth rate in Spain continued to fall in 2019, recording its lowest rate since 1941, with no increase in the birth rate expected over the forecast period, according to Euromonitor International socioeconomic data. The falling birth rate is the result of a number of factors, including the decline in the number of women of fertile age, the emigration of young Spaniards to other countries and the decline in the number of immigrants.

Spanish healthcare system also limiting growth in paediatric consumer health

The performance in paediatric consumer health continues to be strongly influenced by the Spanish healthcare system, which allows the same active ingredient in both reimbursable and non-reimbursable products, which reduces the potential sales of paediatric consumer health. Although Spanish parents are playing a more proactive role in their children’s health, this is mostly linked to the prevention side as opposed to treatment.

Spanish might have smaller families but will spend more on the children they do have

Spanish average disposable income is set to grow in the years to come. This will result in parents, even though they are having fewer babies, on average, spending more on each of their offspring than they might have done in the past.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Mylan continues to lead, but is experiencing stock shortages

Although Mylan continues to lead paediatric consumer health, it also continues to suffer from supply shortages. Its strength is based on the wide penetration of its paediatric ibuprofen Dalsy.

Nappy rash treatment players fill the second and third spots in paediatric consumer health

Alongside paediatric analgesics, nappy (diaper) rash treatments is the biggest category in value terms in paediatric consumer health. As a consequence, the companies that lead nappy (diaper) rash treatments occupy the second and third positions in overall paediatric consumer health – Johnson & Johnson and Reckitt Benckiser España.

Rx products limit the number of players operating in OTC paediatric consumer health

Spanish parents are used to consulting the doctor before medicating their children, especially for children under five. Consequently, the doctor tends to be the person who prescribes medicines for children, particularly younger children, and this prescription tends to be reimbursable, unlike the OTC counterparts.
