Executive Summary

Oct 2019
PROSPECTS
Growing awareness and preventative healthcare trend boost demand

Consumer awareness of the benefits of dietary supplements is increasing. Like vitamins, this is underpinned by the increasing popularity of a preventative approach to healthcare.

Use of antibiotics contributes to probiotics’ growth

Probiotics saw growth in 2019, increasingly being perceived as essential. Probiotics are usually taken with antibiotics to reduce their negative influence.

Drugstores/parapharmacies set to gain share

Modern healthcare specialist retailers, mainly represented by drugstores/parapharmacies, extended their lead in the retail distribution of dietary supplements over the review period. The growth in drugstores/parapharmacies was supported by a rising number of outlets and wider brand and product assortments.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Adult use of Linex boosted by popularity for use by babies

In a fragmented environment, Linex by Novartis AG continued to lead dietary supplements in Azerbaijan in 2019, and indeed saw a slight share gain. The brand is already familiar to consumers, and became an essential part of home first aid kits.

Magnesium supplements environment sees increasing competition

Magne B6 from Sanofi-Aventis Azerbaijan was historically the most familiar magnesium supplement over the review period. However, by 2019 more products had started to penetrate this category, offering better prices and a greater concentration of magnesium in each pill.

Children represent increasingly important target group

Over the review period the only significant new product developments were seen in paediatric dietary supplements. At the end of the review period the focus remained on the provision of children’s dietary supplements, not least because their prices are not mandatorily regulated by the Tariff Council, and thus higher mark-ups can be applied.
