Czechs spend big on dietary supplements

Czech consumers spend a great deal on dietary supplements, and further strong and accelerating current value growth was witnessed in 2019. People are most interested in supplements which promote digestion, the correct functioning of the immune system and joint health.

Other herbal/traditional dietary supplements are increasingly popular for improving a range of conditions

Other herbal/traditional dietary supplements witnessed another year of strong retail value growth in 2019, propelled by the popularity of “green” supplements such as chlorella, spirulina, green coffee bean and young barley. Chlorella and spirulina are associated with lowering cholesterol, reducing blood pressure, boosting metabolism and improving gut health.

Regulatory pressures set to increase

When foods and dietary supplements are launched in the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Agriculture must be notified. Unlike medication, it assesses their safety, not efficacy.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Internet sales are behind the strong growth

The share of internet retailing within dietary supplements witnessed strong growth over the review period. The primary driver of this increase was retailers’ focused efforts on improving the online shopping experience for customers through better online education and targeted marketing.

Private label takes share

Private label increased its share in dietary supplements in 2019. Nevertheless, it does not pose a major threat to the established companies.

New beauty supplements a success

Beauty supplements combining marine collagen, chondroitin and glucosamine achieved strong sales at the end of the review period. The Czech celebrity and model, Simona Krainova, recently launched a beauty supplement under the Masterpiece brand.
