Wipes registered an increase in value sales in 2020, as a result of the pandemic, particularly wipes containing alcohol for sanitising hands or surfaces to remove any trace of COVID-19. In 2021, with the pandemic still lingering, value growth continued though was lower than in 2020, as consumers were less concerned about the virus.
Cosmetic wipes registered higher volume growth, following on from a disastrous year in 2020. In 2021, with society gradually opening up, and women wearing make-up again, volume sales of cosmetic wipes increased.
Baby wipes continued to account for the majority of value sales. Despite lower birth rates, baby wipes are still popular.
Wipes will register moderate constant value growth over the forecast period. The convenience factor of wipes will continue to support volume sales.
During the pandemic, Slovenian consumers overlooked their sustainability concerns in terms of disposable wipes and in particular the negative environmental impact of single-use wipes. However, these concerns will again come to the fore over the forecast period as worries about COVID-19 abate.
While wipes are dominated by global players in Slovenia, with Beiersdorf leading, followed by Unilever, Kimberly-Clark and Procter & Gamble, through its distributor Orbico, other players could gain value share over the forecast period. With inflationary pressures expected to increase over the forecast period, as global energy prices increase and continuing global supply issues feed into retail price rises, consumers could be increasingly price sensitive.
