Retail volume and value sales of sweet biscuits, fruit snacks and snack bars are set to see strong growth in 2020, benefitting from Canadians maintaining their strong snacking tradition while being forced to spend more time at home. Even though impulse sales of these and other snacks at convenience stores and forecourt retailers have been reduced as a result of significantly reduced mobility among consumers, snacks have remained readily available in grocery stores and online, and Canadians have maintained a steady supply with which to indulge themselves and their children unable to attend school.
While sweet biscuits overall struggled to generate positive volume growth in 2018 and 2019, the category’s sales growth will receive a boost in 2020 from increased time spent at home due to school closures as well as to increased demand for indulgence products during the pandemic lockdown period. However, fruit snacks and snack bars will see stronger growth, as both remain very much more in line with health and wellness trends.
Mondelez Canada and General Mills will maintain their leading value shares within sweet biscuits, snack bars and fruit snacks in 2020 on the strength of their strong brand portfolios, wide distribution and leadership within sweet biscuits and snack bars, respectively. However, they also continue to lose value share to other players such as General Mills’ loss to The Promotion in Motion and Sun-Maid Growers of California in fruit snacks and Kind in snack bars – the fastest-growing categories – and Mondelez’ loss to other brands, but particularly to private label and artisanal products over the year.
