Depilatories were negatively impacted by the 2020 pandemic lockdowns, as with people spending significant amounts of time at home and not meeting with other people, there was less demand for depilatories. In 2021, with society gradually opening up and people want to present themselves well, depilatories registered healthy current value and volume growth.
Depilatories remained underdeveloped in Algeria, with value sales still relatively low. Hair removers/bleaches and women’s razors and blades were the only products to register notable sales in 2021.
Even prior to the pandemic, the Algerian economy had been struggling, with resultant reduction in consumer purchasing power. Growing restrictions on imports led to the rising cost of imported depilatories, which helped domestic players to gain ground.
Value sales of depilatories are still expected to remain low in Algeria over the forecast period, as traditional home-made remedies continue to be widely used. The so called “oriental wax” (cire orientale), prepared with sugar, honey and lemon is a popular way of removing hair, not only because it is cheap and effective, but also because it is natural, hypoallergenic and cheap.
New product launches are likely to be seen, mainly targeting higher-income consumers. The growing trend towards organic and natural ingredients is expected to encourage manufacturers to develop and launch new depilatory solutions, such as gentler formulations that exfoliate the skin or ensure odour-free depilation, and advanced creams that enable quick depilation.
Within the Arabic culture, depilation is seen as not only aesthetic, but also hygienic. All the same, depilatories are expected to post lower growth than over the review period.
