Depilatories did not benefit as much from society opening up as other beauty and personal care products and registered a decrease in volume sales for the second year running, though the decline was not as steep as in 2020. The reopening of beauty dampened volume growth.
Responsible for Procter & Gamble’s Gillette brand in the Dominican Republic, Distribuidora Corripio remained the largest player in depilatories in 2021, accounting for over half of value share. Ecuadorian Grupo Transbel and Sued & Fargesa ranked second and third respectively, with Transbel overtaking Sued & Fargesa in 2021, as direct selling recovered strongly from the pandemic.
Women’s razors and blades continued to account for the majority of value sales, but hair removers/bleaches registered higher current value growth and has gained popularity over the review period and is expected to also outperform women’s razors and blades over the forecast period. Women’s pre shave registered negligible value sales, as Dominican women generally use soap or shower gel instead to build up a lather.
Depilatories will maintain a moderate rate of growth throughout the forecast period. Since consumers are expected to remain price-sensitive in the short-term at least, as the economy recovers from the pandemic, pricing competition will be intense, which may limit opportunities for the development of value-added products during the forecast period.
The economic fallout of the pandemic may continue impacting depilatories in the beginning of the forecast period. Since disposable incomes will continue to be impacted by the economic slowdown, changes in waxing habits may occur.
Wax strips are practical for removing small areas of hair at home and most likely wax strips will gain value share over the forecast period, as they offer a practical cost-effective alternative to hair removal at a beauty salon. In addition, the treatment lasts longer than hair removal with razors and blades.
