LG Household & Health Care continued to lead depilatories in value terms in 2021, as the local distributor and license owner of Edgewell Personal Care Brands LLC’s Schick brand. The brand has wide coverage and has become established as the leading brand in depilatories in South Korea.
Although women’s razors and blades saw declines, hair removers/bleaches saw increases for the two consecutive years of the pandemic. Nevertheless, demand was not as high as in many Western countries.
Alternatives that can replace depilatories will continue to hamper sales in the forecast period, with only slow current value and volume growth. Laser hair removal is one of the popular treatments that consumers in South Korea undergo at dermatologists and skin clinics, and since hair removal is a semi-permanent treatment, more consumers are choosing these treatments over depilatories for their convenience.
Although depilatories lacks growth potential, hopes of an end to the pandemic may have a slight positive effect on the category in the forecast period. Many consumers are planning a summer holiday in 2022, which was not possible for two consecutive years during the outbreak of the pandemic.
Consumer education is needed concerning the correct use of depilatories. It has been a couple of years since wax-type hair removers started to be regulated as cosmetic products under the guidance of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MSDF).
