Executive Summary

Oct 2019
PROSPECTS
Milder weather reduces visits to doctors for cough, cold and flu symptoms

Cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies is even more affected than analgesics by the weather. Winter is increasingly characterised by low peaks and/or short periods of cold and flu symptoms.

Warning indication and low rainfall weaken demand for nasal sprays

Further price increases and lower rainfall levels depressed retail volume sales of nasal sprays during 2019. Lower demand also had a knock-on negative effect on current value sales.

Hay fever products benefit from higher pollen count and successful generics

The main factor impacting pathologies is waning levels of rainfall in winter and/or spring. However, while this adversely affects sales of nasal sprays, it usually boosts the demand for antihistamines/allergy remedies (systemic), as no or less rain means more pollen.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
The leader benefits from key acquisition as herbal products gain ground

Procter & Gamble consolidated its position as the leading GBO during 2019, especially through the acquisition of Merck Consumer Healthcare Belgium’s brands from 2018. In NBO terms, the global player also benefited from renewed support for Vicks Vaporub (herbal).

Tight regulation limits innovation

Apart from the trend for more natural and herbal products, innovation is increasingly limited in cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies. While a higher number of de-regulated countries like the Netherlands witnessed the launch of 2-in-1 products in cough remedies, the failure of Bronchostop Duo by Omega Pharma has dissuaded manufacturers from introducing similar novelties in Belgium.

More caution in advertising as incidence of ailments decreases

The advertising of brands and products continued from winter 2018/2019, as manufacturers could not cancel their booked media investments and airing schedules once they realised the number of cases of coughs, colds and flu were declining appreciably. Manufacturers incurred strong losses in TV advertising for nasal sprays, cough remedies and pharyngeal preparations as a result.
