PROSPECTS
Increasing prevalence of allergies in Latvia contributes to growth

The increasing number of people in Latvia suffering allergies to various foods, dust and pollen contributed to the strong growth of systemic antihistamines/allergy remedies in current value terms in 2019. This category showed the second fastest growth within the category in this year, and is expected to continue to see strong growth over the forecast period.

Latvian consumers continue turning to natural remedies

Latvia has a strong tradition of folk remedies and traditional treatments, such as hot herbal teas, foot baths and rest, in cases when illness symptoms are not too severe, such as the common cold. Many Latvians therefore appreciate cold remedies that contain natural, herbal ingredients, especially locally-known herbs, due to concerns about the potential side-effects of standard medicines.

Segmentation by symptoms seen in cough and cold remedies

Due to the climatic conditions in Latvia, the cold and flu season can last up to nine months of the year. The consumption of cough and cold remedies is relatively high, with peaks in the autumn and spring.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Global players dominate, led by GSK Consumer Healthcare

GSK Consumer Healthcare maintained its lead within cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies in value terms in 2019. This was due to the ongoing success of its leading brand Theraflu, and to a lesser extent Vibrocil, Tavegyl and Otrivin.

Herbal ingredients help local player Silvanols maintain second position

Local player Silvanols ranked second in cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies in 2019, thanks mainly to its Faringospray brand. This brand accounted for around two thirds of the company’s total value sales in 2019, with the balance held by smaller brands such as Rinogels, Bronhosil and Sinustrong+.

New product launches and extensions, although also a withdrawal

Several new product launches were seen in cough, cold and allergy remedies in Latvia in recent years. For example, the Septabene range from Krka dd Novo Mesto was extended with Septabene Lemon and Elderberry 3mg/1mg tablets in 2018.
