Aggressive flu strain helps drive demand for cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies

Demand for cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies is very seasonal and hard to predict. January 2019 saw below average temperatures with Portugal also facing the challenge of a particularly aggressive flu strain, AH3, with record numbers of deaths being recorded in January as a result.

Climate change, pollution and stress contributing to rise in allergies

Antihistamines/allergy remedies (systemic) continued to record strong growth in 2019. According to the Sociedade Portuguesa de Alergologia e Imunologia Clínica (Portuguese Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology - SPAIC), more and more people are suffering from respiratory allergies, especially rhinitis.

Growing focus on preventive medicine

Portuguese consumers are becoming more proactive in terms of their health and more careful with regard to their diet as awareness of its effect on health grows. Some consumers are also becoming more inclined to take vitamins and dietary supplements to reinforce their immune system during the winter.

Sanofi Produtos Farmacêuticos retained the lead in cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies in 2019 thanks to its strong brand portfolio, although it saw a decline in its share due to the falling demand for cough remedies. In cough remedies the company offers its Bisolvon, Mucosolvan and Bisoltussin brands to meet the different needs of consumers (eg wet or dry coughs).

Cough remedies with natural ingredients providing stiff competition

Herbal products have been growing in popularity. This is partly the result of the recent success of the Grintuss brand from Aboca in cough remedies.

Cetix wins share thanks to television advertising

Advertising remained a key strategy to winning share in cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies at the end of the review period, with consumers often placing their trust in brand names they are familiar with.
