With the notable exceptions of air care and polishes, COVID-19 has had a significant positive effect on demand for home care in Cambodia, with retail constant value sales (2021 prices) expanding at their fastest rate in well over a decade in 2021. Not only have local consumers been spending more time at home due to COVID-19 restrictions, the pandemic has also led them to pay more attention to home hygiene, with dishwashing, laundry care and surface care the biggest beneficiaries of this.
Laundry care dominates retail value sales of home care in Cambodia, with dishwashing accounting for most of the remainder. Demand in both of these categories was significantly boosted by a surge in COVID-19 infections in Cambodia during mid-2021.
The majority of cleaning chores continue to be performed by women in Cambodia, in line with the country’s conservative and traditional culture. Although the number of women in the workplace continues to rise, most women still live with their families and share cleaning responsibilities.
Having gotten off relatively lightly in 2020, there was a surge in the incidence of COVID-19 in Cambodia during 2021. However, there were relatively few deaths.
The country’s government is focusing on economic growth and development including formulating frameworks and policies/regulations for the digital economy. The government launched a bank for SMEs and is actively promoting digital start-ups, which it is also supporting by investing in improving the technological infrastructure across the country.
There will be modest growth in retail constant value sales (2021 prices) of home care during the forecast period, which urbanisation, population growth and an anticipated post-pandemic economic rebound set to be the main drivers of growth.
