Home care witnessed dynamic growth during the pandemic as consumers became more hygiene conscious and spent more time at home. However, with COVID-19 fears softening in 2022 and the country reopening demand for many home care products softened.
Cambodia fully re-opened at the end of 2021 with it lifting its remaining COVID-19 restrictions. This was mainly thanks to a successful vaccination campaign and booster dose which provided Cambodians with the confidence to return to the workplace and to start shopping in supermarkets and other retail outlets.
Cambodia saw real GDP growth of 5.7% in 2022, boosted by the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and the recovery of the country’s inbound tourism industry.
The government’s socioeconomic interventions such as the Cash Transfer Program for the Poor and Vulnerable Households have been effective in softening the impact of global surges in commodity prices on the poor.
The COVID-19 pandemic in Cambodia helped boost interest in e-commerce and cashless payments, with almost two-thirds of the population using delivery services, many of which were first-time users. The rise in online shopping was supported by both mobile and social commerce, with possession rate for smartphones increasing sharply over the review period, rising from 65% of households in 2017 to 86% in 2022.
With rising urbanisation and a young population, it is expected that the number of new households will continue to grow at a healthy pace over the forecast period. New homes should create strong demand for home care, with the category set to return to growth in retail volume terms from 2023 onwards.
